“Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.”

I’ve often noticed just how easy it can be for our insecurities to hijack our everyday living, especially if we happen to be one of those who are worried about being alone or not having a companion, friends or family members in our future. For such people, the concept of enjoying their own company is an alien one, to the extent that they probably find such notions laughable and downright unrealistic.

First of all, by enjoying being in your own company, you end up reducing your dependency on others and start becoming more independent. Just think about it – if you yourself enough to give yourself company, you don’t need others to be happy. This doesn’t mean that you don’t invest your time and efforts in building and sustaining relationships with others, rather all it means is that you don’t completely depend on those relationships to feel happy. Simply put, you shouldn’t ever put the key of your happiness in other peoples’ pockets.

Secondly, one should always be comfortable enough in their own body, their own mind and their own thoughts to be perfectly okay with spending time with themselves. This will achieve two things – it’ll make you comfortable with the thought of being alone (something you can later apply to travel alone, watch movies on your own and even go for long drives by yourself), and it’ll make you realize that you’re enough for yourself. That you can take care of yourself and that you don’t need anyone else to have a good time.

Finally, in the midst of doing all of this, you’ll start learning new things about yourself – qualities you never knew you possessed, habits you never knew you had and weaknesses you never knew you harboured. You will grow as a person, and end up figuring out what actually inspires and motivates you the most. You’ll get a clearer picture of what your priorities in life are, and will curate your own dreams and beliefs. You will, for lack of a better phrase, start living a better and healthier life.

So be alone, eat alone and take yourself out on dates. Don’t ever shy away from enjoying your own company and start enjoying your own company – you’ll never stop reaping the benefits.
